All teenagers go through that stage where they feel awkward in their body and battle with self esteem issues. That is inevitable and all part of growing up. However there are simple gifts a parent could give to their kid that may help will them build their confidence and emerge out of their developmental crossroads relatively unscathed.
In the prime of adolescence teens become aware of their natural talents. So as a gift a parent could help them positively develop their innate abilities. For instance for the artistically inclined 16-year old girl a great gift would be to enroll her in an extra-curricular art class after school. Or for the boy who has singing potential a nice gesture would be to hire a vocal coach to teach him how to hone his talents. Gifts like these would not only allow them to sharpen their abilities, but also help to build their confidence.
A parent who is aware of the image struggle their teenager is going through could be of support by urging their kid to join groups of teens who are like them. For a kid who plays the drums forming a band of like-minded teenage musicians would give him/her a social group they could feel comfortable being apart of. And to encourage the building of these friendships a parent could give their kid a new drum set for practice or even remodel the basement so they can all have a place to rehearse. Gifts like these will help the teenager become more aware of who they are, and aide in making friendships. Having good friends is a effective cure to low self-esteem.
One of the most obvious change that adolescences go through is that of their outside appearance. Teenagers have the tendency to alter their look in order to express themselves more. For the the punk rocker skinny jeans, and tight shirts is what their interested in. For the teenage rapper sagging pants, and baseball hats is their look. For the goth kid black clothes, heavy eye makeup, and dog collars are what they are drawn to. Look and style is very important when it comes to a young adult’s self-esteem. So as a gift parents could buy clothes and accessories that would fit their kids personality. This could be a little difficult especially if the teens taste is very eccentric. So instead of buying the items an alternative could be to just buy a gift card to their favorite store and let them do their own shopping. This would be a safer way to go.
However the best gift a parent could give to their developing teen can not be bought. The gift of unconditional love and trust is really what all teenagers crave. Most confident and well rounded adolescents have a support system at home that they lean on during difficult times. Parents need to constantly boost the confidence of their child by letting them know how special and unique they are,and by giving them the attention they deserve. This type of love is not sold in stores, but rather comes from the heart of a good parent.
