Why would PTSD make it more likely for someone to be assaulted???
I was reading a wiki-how on how to defend yourself in a rape situation (http://www.wikihow.com/Prevent-a-Potential-Rape) when I read “Studies find that victims of multiple assaults have higher levels of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder than victims of only one assault. So if someone was assaulted twice in childhood and adolescence they would be at an increased risk of adult assault. ”
…why? Wouldnt having PSTD make you more aware… less trusting, and aid you in avoiding potentially hazardous situations? I’m confused… is there anyone who could clear this up for me?
A friend of mine is in this situation and due to the assaults, she does have PTSD. Although you are correct that in her case, she is more aware and does avoid situations that have a higher risk factor, her body language is a signal for predators that she sees herself as a victim. Being as predators do look for easy prey. The display of body language that, subconsciously, stands out is often looked for by the aggressor that is looking for a victim. They get a feeling of power assuming that most of the victim types not only pose an easier target with reduced resistance, afterward there is less likely hood that charges will be filed or prosecution followed through on. This in turn raises the power that their ego is fed by.
