The purpose of this article is to let parents know how to help your 5 year old continue successful development from toddler to adolescent. The following 3 strategies examples of more useful tips to remember when providing good discipline to children in this age range:
1) Help your 5 year old continue to express feeling in words instead of actions. Many times parents will say “use your words”, however this is not an effective strategy. As a parent you want to make sure that you give your child the words he or she is attempting to communicate.
2) Another way to help your child communicate is to ask your child questions. For an example you can ask “Are you excited about going to your friend’s house?”, “What something that make you angry about going to school?” or “What is the most disappointing thing that happened to you today?” Questions like these will help facilitate your child’s ability to share his or her feelings with you.
3) Finally, you can reflect back to the child what you hear him or her saying to you. For example say to your child “It seems like you are angry when you walked into the car today”. “You look upset that your friend is not able to come over and play today” or “You look very excited to go outside and play!” Reflecting or “mirror” back what you see the child expressing will help your five year old process his/her feelings and share more with you.
In conclusion always make sure that you set a good example for you child and model the expected behaviors. Children of this age are constantly looking to you as the parent to follow your lead.
Do you want to learn exactly how to eliminate your child’s out-of-control and defiant behavior without using Punishments, Time-Outs, Behavioral Plans, or Rewards?
